Iowa State University (ISU) is seeking candidates for a Sign Language Interpreter to coordinate, develop, execute and deliver sign language interpretation and technology services to support Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students. Primary responsibilities of this position will be to deliver sign language interpretation in a collegiate setting to meet accommodation needs of ISU Deaf/HH students. This position will deliver sign language interpretation in a wide variety of settings including highly-complex materials in class lectures, discussion groups, and labs, as well as in various settings outside of the classroom such as student appointments, campus events, orientation activities, and other activities as necessary.
Responsibilities include supporting ISU’s Deaf/HH student population, assisting with the coordination of the interpretation and technology services to be provided, collaborating with campus stakeholders in developing a sustainable model for sign language interpreters, captioning services, and technology solutions for Deaf/HH students, working with campus leadership to assist in the resolution of program issues, and interfacing with other campus stakeholders (ie. Office of the Vice President for Diversity & Inclusion, Office of Equal Opportunity, Office of Senior Vice President and Provost, Office of the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean of Students Office, University Human Resources, Procurement Services, and others).
The successful candidate will possess the ability to interpret complex spoken communication to D/HH, communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of technical and professional audiences and work effectively as part of a team across the University.
This is an 11 month position working August 1 through June 30 each year with the month of July off. Typical hours are Monday – Friday; 8 am – 5 pm. with the exception of school breaks (i.e. spring break, winter break etc). However, there is some flexibility in hours as this position will be required to work a variety of hours including some weekends based on needs for student accommodations (i.e. scheduled courses, activities, meetings, campus events, etc.).
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 7 years.
Licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health as a Sign Language Interpreter/Transliterator.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Additional years of professional experience as a certified interpreter
-Experience in a post-secondary educational environment as a certified interpreter
-Experience administering Deaf/HH programs in private and/or public institutions
-Completion of a nationally accredited Interpreter Training Program
-National Interpreter Certification
