Job Description:
Dean College’s School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach Science of Food during the fall semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds. Adjuncts should be prepared to be flexible teaching all or some of the semester face to face, hybrid or online.
We are seeking an adjunct instructor for BIO168: The Science of Food: What Are You Eating? BIO 168 is a 3-credit class. The adjunct pay rate is $2800/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Biology program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. While Dean College intends to hold classes face-to-face in the fall, all faculty will be expected to make active use of the learning management system (MyCourses) at least at a minimum level established by the college.
The course description is as follows: Trillions of microorganisms live in your gut without which you could not survive. Cheese, yogurt, beer, and bread: What do they all have in common? This course will provide an interactive forum to discuss the science involved in the food we produce and eat. Topics may include the following: a brief review of human nutrition, a description and discussion of food organisms in modern diets, chemical reactions involved in food preparation and the environmental impact of dietary choices.
BIO 168 serves as a Core Distribution elective in Natural Sciences and Mathematics providing foundational skills while exposing non-science majors to topics and practices of science. The course includes an overview of human nutrition and explores topics such as the modern diet, chemical reactions involved in food preparation and the environmental impact of dietary choices.
Requirements:
A Master’s degree in biology, nutrition or related discipline area is required, a PhD preferred;
College teaching experience preferred, particularly experience teaching first and second year undergraduates as well as online;
Having strong computer skills, the ability to access the Internet, the college’s online resources and website and a willingness to be responsive to students via digital tools is a requirement;
Experience with or willingness to learn Moodle, our learning management system, and classroom media is necessary;
The successful candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teaching; use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy and the ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles
