Position Summary
The Linux Systems Engineer will be part of a team responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all Linux-based systems. He/she will work to meet Linux hardware, software, and implementation standards and assist in continually updating systems to maintain those standards. Other duties will include ensuring the installed applications are working correctly to satisfy all business needs. This position will report to a US-based management team and will be required to communicate frequently with counterparts at several global locations.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform implementation and day-to-day maintenance of Linux systems.
• Monitor system resources and make recommendations to maximize system performance.
• Update Linux systems to maintain compliance with documented security infrastructure and policy.
• Configure Linux systems and applications to meet all business needs and security standards.
• Ensure all critical data is backed up with the proper frequency and retention.
• Troubleshoot problems and fix them independently or propose solutions to management personnel.
• Help develop technical documentation for backups, upgrades, and all other related documentation as needed.
• Communicate technical information effectively to technical and non-technical people.
• Provide recommendations for systems additions and upgrades.
• Support and act as a technical resource for the Systems, App/Dev, Database and Reporting teams.
• Coordinate with management personnel on proposals, work estimates, projects, and solutions involving Linux systems.
• Work with infrastructure counterparts to evaluate new technology.
• Adhere to company guidelines and procedures.
• Participate in an on-call support rotation.
Qualifications
• 7+ years of experience in enterprise IT support.
5+ years of Linux/Unix OS experience, with a focus in administering Linux technologies in an Enterprise that complied with security standards (PCI DSS, HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.).
• Advanced technical knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux derivatives (RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Oracle Linux, etc.).
• Excellent skillsets in scripting languages (Bash, PHP, Python, etc.).
• Practical experience in deployment, management, and troubleshooting of Linux in physical and virtual environments.
• Detailed understanding of computer server architectures and peripherals.
• Working knowledge of virtualization and cloud computing concepts and technologies.
• Working knowledge of VMware cloud infrastructure.
• The ability to resolve common virtual machine and host server bottlenecks.
• Understanding of hosting architectures including database, network, and SAN technologies and concepts.
• Solid understanding of server backup technologies and methodologies.
• Strong understanding of Information Security concepts in virtual environments.
• The ability to quickly assess problems and find workable solutions.
• The skills to synthesize information, distill relevant facts and reach logical conclusions.
• Desire to continue skill set improvement.
• Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Able to work US production hours (9a-6p ET) on a consistent basis.
Desired Qualifications:
• 2+ years working in a call center or multi-client environment.
• 2+ years working with MySQL/MariaDB.
• 2+ years working with web servers, application servers, and load balancers/proxy servers (Apache, Nginx, Tomcat, JBoss/WildFly, HAProxy, etc.).
• Working knowledge of Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI).
• Linux and/or VMWare/Nutanix certifications.
• Working knowledge of non-Red Hat Enterprise Linux derivatives (Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, etc.).
• AWS/Azure cloud experience.
• Knowledge of various Linux automation and endpoint management solutions.
