QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:
Doctorate degree in Chemistry; additional graduate work in biology, biochemistry, or related area preferred;
Proven knowledge of and preference for experience in teaching Introduction to Chemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and the associated laboratories;
Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written;
Ability to work with and teach to diverse populations is essential;
Ability to apply traditional and innovative technologies is essential;
Ability to develop and/or implement strategies to support students’ retention, persistence and program completion is essential;
Ability to engage students as active partners in the teaching/learning process;
Ability to relate the concepts of chemistry to real life situations and applications;
Computer literacy and experience using technology in the learning environment is essential;
Experience teaching in an online environment preferred;
An understanding of learning styles is preferred; willingness to learn is essential;
Appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS);
Experience teaching at a two-year post-secondary institution preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The general responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Preparing, instructing and grading all class and laboratory coursework;
Assigning final grades;
Maintaining regularly scheduled hours to meet with students;
Ability to use data and assessment tools in the evaluation and improvement of instruction;
Engaging in activities to improve student learning, retention, and completion;
Serving the community;
Serving effectively on college committees.
Participating in grant writing individually and/or on a team.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The specific responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Preparing a syllabus for the lecture class and laboratories;
Instructing the lecture class and laboratories;
Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments; and entering grades in Blackboard gradebook on a timely basis;
Assigning final grades;
Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
Participating in Department budget preparation and in course schedule preparation;
Developing and maintaining course management through college’s Learning Management system;
Assisting with Departmental projects and programs;
Serve on at least one College committee/workgroup;
Develop and/or implement strategies to support students’ retention, persistence, and program completion is essential.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
