Primary Function
Structural welders operate a variety of manual and automated welding equipment. They are qualified in multiple processes, including SMAW/Stick, FCAW, and oxy-acetylene torch cutting. Our specialized structural welders can perform processes such as GMAW/MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding/Metal Inert Gas), SAW (Submerged Arc Welding), and RMD Structural Welding. They also perform air carbon and arc gouging if required by the project.
Special Skills and Certifications
· AWS certification in structural welding
· TESDA Certification
· OSHA Certification is preferred
· Global deployment (international) experience is preferred
· GMAW/MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding/Metal Inert Gas) welding a plus
· SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) a plus
· RMD (Structural) a plus
· Experience using orbital welding equipment a plus
· Basic rigging experience is preferred
Specialized Knowledge
· Experience selecting equipment and planning layouts, assemblies and welds, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques
· Ability to weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions
· Ability to interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
· Select filler materials per WPS
· Select and adjust gasses per WPS
· Ability to read welding symbols on drawings
· Ability to set-up and operate oxy-acetylene cutting equipment
· Ability to work at heights from scaffold or elevated work platforms
Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Weld Activities
· Reviews engineering drawings to plan the layout of the structure, align, and fit components together
· Applies craft-related mathematics to cuts plates, beams, girders, gussets, columns, etc. to required dimensions
· Prepares weld surfaces using craft-specific tools such as power saws, oxy-acetylene cutting torches, portable grinders, etc.
· Bolts, clamps, braces, and tack-welds structural components to secure in position for welding
· Selects and sets welders/equipment per WPS parameters
· Obtains specified filler material (e.g., electrode or wire) per WPS
· Connects welding units to obtain amperage, voltage, etc. per WPS
Weld Activities
· Strikes arc that generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and joins edges of work pieces
· Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle
· Performs quality weld that meet project specific WPS
· Carries out post weld clean-up by grinding, buffing, etc.
· May preheat work pieces using hand torch.
Quality Activities
· Examines welds for bead size to comply with WPS
· May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts using cutting torches, straightening presses, and hand tools.
