Job SummaryThe Respiratory Therapist assesses, treats, and cares for patients with breathing disorders. She assumes primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities. The Respiratory Therapist initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures, maintains patient records, and selects, assembles, checks, and operates equipment.Duties and Responsibilities1. Administers medically-prescribed humidification, aerosols, bronchodilators, and mucolytics for the relief of bronchospasm and liquefaction of tenacious mucus secretions2. Administers medically-prescribed gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide using different devices with variable fractional inspired oxygen3. Employs or performs medically-prescribed chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, and breathing exercises4.
Employs medically-prescribed Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing therapy and monitors the effectiveness of the adopted modalities5. Informs the medical staff of progress or untoward symptoms that are observed6. Connects pediatrics patients to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure7.
Assists the patient in performing Incentive Spirometry, gives proper instructions, and notifies the medical staff about the response and progress of the patient8. Performs Pulmonary Function Test and measures the parameters of the patient9. Extracts arterial blood samples for Arterial Blood Gas analysis and relays the results to the medical staff10.
Monitors arterial blood oxygen saturation by Pulse Oximetry11. Participates in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and assists in the establishment of a patent airway12. Operates and connects mechanical ventilators to patients who need ventilation support13.
Helps wean the patient from oxygen therapy and from mechanical ventilation14. Assists in the rehabilitation and education of patients with chronic pulmonary disorders15. Participates in giving home therapy instructions16.
