Section 2 – Purpose of Job

This role is part of the Credit Solutions Group (“CSG”). CSG is in charge of 1) credit advisory support in relation to business origination, portfolio management and broader strategic initiatives in the maritime and aviation sector globally; identification of early signs of stress on specific obligors or (sub)sectors and 2) managing a portfolio of financially stressed and distressed transactions and clients in the maritime, offshore and aviation sector with the objective to design and execute action plans to minimise provisions and maximise the bank recovery. CSG is part of the front office team within Transportation Department (“TPD”)
The key purpose of the role is to provide professional advisory support to the maritime and aviation front office teams, to become a trusted counterparty and to engage in an active dialogue within the credit “ecosystem” ensuring that new deals align with the overall business strategy and that the existing portfolio is monitored in a robust and consistent manner.

Section 3 – Background

The core team of CSG is composed of 6 members. This role is for a transportation credit specialist reporting to the Team Head (with initial focus on the maritime portfolio).
The key objective for this role is to assume an advisory role for a global transportation business across the subsectors and products. Maritime team is global and covers a diverse portfolio of ships and ship owners. The Aviation team covers a portfolio of commercial aircraft with international airlines.
The successful candidate is expected to have a good general understanding of short-term and long-term trends and key themes as well as knowledge of corporate credit and financing structures in the transportation sector. The role may be initially focused on the maritime sector, hence affinity with global shipping is a plus. Affinity with banks’ internal grading models and methodology is also preferred.
The candidate acts as a “bridge” between front office and credit supporting TPD’s ambition to continue to expand its global franchise in the transportation sector, while also ensuring that the existing portfolio and new business opportunities fit the credit guidelines/risk appetite and are assessed in a comprehensive and professional manner

Section 4 – Facts / Scale

The candidate assuming the role will be responsible for various matters related to the global maritime and aviation portfolio and will, in particular, assume a responsibility for a portfolio of ca. 25 corporate clients across different geographies and sub-sectors to act as a main sparring partner on both new business, credit monitoring and waivers/amendments.
The role will involve review and professional advisory to credit applications of various complexity. The role will also require attendance of several weekly business calls and meetings with front office and credit teams
Involvement in ad hoc strategic and credit related projects depending on the expertise of the candidate

Section 5 – Accountabilities & Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include a.o.:

Support management decision in growing TPD global franchise by engaging in review and analysis of new business opportunities from a.o. credit, business, market and transaction perspective
Proactively provide expert advice and guidance to TPD front office members, engage in the structuring of new deals with the aim of ensuring that new transactions fit with the business strategy and risk appetite of TPD and SMBC
Engage with the front office teams to ensure that comprehensive analysis is conducted in TPD credit papers, provide feedback and solutions with complex transactions and requests. Review applications for new and existing clients and ensure that they address all the key elements, risks and mitigants and provide a balanced assessment of corporate and transaction risks.
Building on in-depth knowledge and understanding of internal procedures, engage in constructive negotiations and act as a link between front office teams and credit department. Establish trusted relationships with key internal stakeholders.
Manage initiatives related to broader credit matters such as credit guidelines and risk appetite policies, review of operational framework and efficiency and various ad-hoc projects.

Section 6 – Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential credit analysis skills and experience:

Strong numerical and financial skills with the ability to analyse and interpret companies’ financial accounts.
Capacity to interpret and challenge financial models to establish corporate and cash flow projections
Previous experience in writing detailed credit papers

Specialist knowledge:

Understanding of and interest in the transportation sector and current trends (experience in the maritime sector is a plus)
Knowledge of structures and documentation used in transportation finance

Strategic thinking, and capacity to analyse and rapidly identify the key points of attention, ability to balance business needs with credit risk
Ability to perform in a high paced environment under pressure and sound organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills ensuring sound cooperation with all internal stakeholders
Team player, spirit of cooperation, ability to speak with impact and influence
Relevant financial degree completed by relevant practical credit analysis experience in either front office or credit risk.
